A Tel Domain - Is it really worth the price?

I've been following closely the tel domain story from the early announcements. After watching and reading articles and information, I figured the tel domain was destined for greatness. To my surprise, the buzz or hype has not been building as I was expecting. After all February 3, 2009 is nearing. That is the day tel domain goes live on the world wide web. Do people out there know or even care about this date in history? If the consumers out there don't care about it, then I have to ask the question. Why don't they care?

Well this is an interesting question. Dot tel can be purchased now for $379 US with a three year term. Since the first phase of tel domain purchases, the price has been the same. Strictly from a domain name perspective, you may say the price is steep. I would suggest that view is slightly inaccurate. This isn't your regular domain name After all Having said this, an individual looking to share contact information for jobs and with friends the price for a tel domain is too high. Agreed. Most non tech geek types who are use many of the social networking websites and own mobile devices aren't likely to bite at that selling price.

On the other hand, if you own a business, you need to think hard on this. Owning a tel domain with a business is a great combination. A price tag of $379 US is not a lot of money when you consider you are buying something for life. Not only that, but you are potentially putting yourself in a better position in the future in comparison to your competitors. You know about a tel domain and its many uses. Dot tel is powerful, secure, simple, doesn't require a website or server, and most importantly, it will help your websites SEO.

Considering how connected the world is becoming, most businesses will need an online presence to maintain a competitive advantage or simply just to keep pace with competitors. Aside from making life a bit easier for your customers wishing to contact your business, your can use a tel domain to improve search engine results. You can add keywords on your tel domain and those keywords will get you rankings in Google. SEO baby. Yes you can add your website on your tel domain page so indeed you can improve your companies traffic! The SEO aspect of a tel domain certainly ads to the value. I think it makes the price tag a bit more palatable for a business looking at buying dot tel.

Another remaining factor in tel domain pricing is that fact that you are paying to reserve a dot tel. Ultimately the importance depends on the value you put in having a tel domain that you want. Of course you can make up any slight variation of your tel domain which likely hasn't been pre-registered yet. The first come first served aspect certainly play a bit part in the pricing. For a business, I believe the reserving of your preferred tel domain is worth a lot. Considering marketing ramifications, I would suggest getting the name you want is worth the extra money you will be paying now.

When you look at the question is a tel domain worth the price, the answer is really yes and no. Dot tel for you and me as an individual, is most likely not worth the early investment. Considering after March 3, 2009 the price of a tel domain drops to $20 US a year, I think most people will simply wait. I have no stats to back that statement up, but I base that opinion on common sense. People are holding onto their money with the global economy situation. Dropping $349 US is out of most peoples price range. If you are in business, the certainly I would suggest that yes, a tel domain is worth the price. There are simply too many negatives to your business if you miss out on the dot tel future.

In closing, I would suggest that the general public don't fully understand what a tel domain is or how it is different. Most people will look at the price and simply stop reading or listening. That's a shame really. Can you blame anyone? In recent time, the domain name market has been saturated. To lump dot tel in with the .biz, .mobi, etc is simply a disservice to the power and beauty of a tel domain. Give it some time. Dot tel will more than likely become part of our everyday world. It's a fantastic communication tool and when we get more connected with mobile devices, the power of dot tel increases also. It will snow ball I believe. Just watch!

Ignoring the price tag should you invest in a tel domain? Yes absolutely! If you are reading this article and it is after March 23, 2009, you can get dot tel for a affordable price. Only $20 US! Now that's quite a difference isn't it? $379 US vs $20 US. I bet most of us are simply waiting. A tel domain is well worth the price regardless of what you pay. Remember though. Invest in a dot tel and beat the rush if you own a business!
